The way they fixed it is some MSI Rep DM'd them a tool to manually flash the controller. Basically there was a bad RGB Controller firmware update sometime last year for several boards that put the RGB controller into an inoperable state. There were several posts about it on MSI's forums. If I had to guess it is due to that stupid OC Knob they like to put on their boards (NEVER USE THAT KNOB, IT IS DANGEROUS). I did figure out that you can disable some MSI services and restart to avoid that behavior, but why the hell their software was holding back my hardware is a question I still don't have answer to. I needed Dragon Center for RGB Control, so I couldn't just get rid of it. The one major issue I personally had was that it locked my 3950X at base clocks instead of letting it boost and underclock like modern processors typically do. There were also reports of it bricking RGB Controllers when trying to update that firmware a little while back, at least that was a recoverable issue in the few cases I've come across. That situation probably isn't too common, but just the fact that it happened is a point against it in my book. A co-worker had a board brick because Dragon Center decided to flash a BIOS update even though he only told it to scan for updates, and then had a power outage. If you don't need Dragon Center for RGB or some other "exclusive" feature (you can control fans in BIOS), don't use it. ![]()
